Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about joining and participating in the MSU Ski and Snowboard Team

Is the Ski Team the same as the Ski Team?

Not quite! We're the Alpine Ski and Snowboard Team, a competitive group that shares the same passion for the slopes as the Spartan Ski Team, but with a different focus. We head up north 5–6 weekends each winter to race against other schools in the USCSA. We keep our team smaller so members can really get to know one another.

What is Alpine Ski Racing?

Alpine ski racing includes two events:
  • Slalom – A technical event with quick, short turns around closely spaced gates. Watch Video
  • Giant Slalom (GS) – A faster course with wider turns and more speed.
Both are fun, fast-paced, and welcome to all skill levels!

What is Alpine Snowboard racing?

Alpine Snowboard Racing includes two events:
  • Slalom (SL): Tight, technical turns through closely spaced gates that test your agility and edge control. Watch Video
  • Giant Slalom (GS): Faster and more fluid, with wider turns and higher speeds—like surfing on snow.
It's all about balance, speed, and timing. You race against the clock. All skill levels welcome!

How do I join the team?

You can join in the fall—look for us at Sparticipation or sign up for our email list on this website. We'll host an info meeting early in the semester, and attendance is highly encouraged. After that, we'll open applications to join the team.

How much does it cost to be on the team?

Full season dues are $550. This covers:
  • Race fees
  • Lodging for team trips
  • Weekend meals
  • Social events throughout the year
You're responsible for your own season pass to Otsego Resort and ski/snowboard equipment.

How do we get to the mountain?

We organize carpools each weekend. Team members take turns driving, and drivers may request gas money from passengers. It's all part of the team experience!

Do I have to compete?

Not at all. While we strongly encourage racing, many members come just to ride and cheer on teammates. If you're coming up north, though, be ready to ski or snowboard!

How competitive is the team?

We have a wide range of experience—from national-level athletes to complete beginners. Everyone's welcome, and there's no pressure to be perfect—just come ready to have fun and improve!

Do I need to be on the team to get the Ikon Pass discount?
